BEACH & TENNIS COMING TOGETHER IN THE BEST WAY
Rows of majestic palm trees line the entrance to the iconic La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, swaying in the coastal breeze, as if waving hello to resort guests. I'm not sure which to credit for the anticipation I feel as I'm dropped off at the mid century lobby, the meticulously maintained tennis facility on the east side of the resort, or the picturesque beach on the west.
Nestled in the heart of La Jolla Shores, the iconic La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, renowned as one of Southern California's premier resorts, is an oasis for tennis and beach lovers alike. I lived in San Diego County for a short time, and I'll never not be in love with this Southern California gem. La Jolla is a short 20 minutes north of San Diego, and the perfect destination for families, couples, friends, or a solo getaway.

WHAT MAKES LA JOLLA BEACH & TENNIS CLUB SPECIAL
In a word, timeless. A destination enjoyed by families for over 80 years, filled with old school charm and modern amenities. Today, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club,The Marine Room restaurant and Lounge at The Marine Room, and the neighboring La Jolla Shores Hotel and The Shores Restaurant are owned and managed by fourth-generation Kellogg family member William (Bill) J. Kellogg. A visit here is unlike other resorts, you truly feel like family.
Another word, tradition. Generations of families have enjoyed the tradition of visiting La Jolla Beach & Tennis club for decades. When I first visited a few years ago on a girls trip, I noticed a very fun tradition of evening barbecues on the beach. Barbecue stations are set up along the beach and families decorate their tables in the most elaborate ways. From casual beach settings to elegant floral arrangements, the tablescapes are a beautiful tradition.
Perhaps the most important word, for fans like you and me, is tennis. Championship tennis has always been a mainstay of the resort, and it has hosted tennis legends and national tournaments for over 80 years. On my recent visit, LJBTC hosted the prestigious IC Rod Laver Junior Challenge Worldwide Finals. It was incredible to watch talented junior tennis players compete for the title.
Visitors can set up private lessons, clinics, or court time prior to arrival and take full advantage of one of the most beautiful tennis facilities! On my previous visit with friends, we took part in a tennis clinic with one of the pros on staff and were able to play some fun doubles.
There's nothing better than being surrounded with other likeminded tennis enthusiasts. The resort is also a favorite among tennis royalty. We bumped into former world number 4, James Blake who was visiting with friends and family. Billie Jean King was also on court during our stay. Talk about star gazing!
ROOMS + SUITES
Each guest room and suite at LJBTC is a perfect oceanfront haven, just steps from the beach. Choose from one, two, or three bedroom suites, each with private bedrooms, kitchen, living and dining areas. I stayed in a Beachfront Studio with kitchenette, living and dining area. I loved waking up to the sound of the ocean, sitting on my front patio with my morning coffee. It was also the perfect place to unwind after a long day of watching tennis. THE SHORES RESTAURANT & BAR
You don't have to go far to experience world class coastal cuisine. I had the most incredible meal at The Shores Restaurant inside the neighboring La Jolla Shores hotel. The staff was lovely, and my server Danielle did an impeccable job of serving me up her recommendations of their most special dishes. I sat by the window and enjoyed a lovely view of the sunset as I sipped a flute of crisp sparkling rosé.
FIRST COURSE
Grilled Adobo Octopus
purple cauliflower puree | prosciutto | caramelized onion | mashed fingerling potato | jalapeño crema
This was my favorite dish! I've had octopus before, but never like this. The mix of flavors was masterfully curated into the most amazing dish! Danielle suggested pairing this with their Jackfruit Mule, which was amazing!
SECOND COURSE
Baja Fish Trio
grilled swordfish | blackened ahi tuna | pan seared seabass | cilantro potato mash | mango habañero chutney | roasted cauliflower | blistered tomatoes | beurre blanc
California coastal done perfectly! Fresh seafood paired with fresh accompaniments and inspired latin flavors. My favorite was the swordfish.
THIRD COURSE
Birria Short Ribs
corn puree | braised birria broth | seasonal vegetables | zucchini blossoms | crispy prosciutto
Something delectable for the meat lovers. Short ribs so fall apart tender you can eat with a fork. Again, the combination of ingredients come together so beautifully!
DESSERT COURSE
Mudd Pie
I was torn between churros & ice cream or mudd pie, but once Danielle mentioned coffee ice cream, I was sold on the pie. Crispy chocolate crust, coffee ice cream, fresh berries, and dark chocolate shavings- how could it be bad?
If you're thinking, “Wow, that's a lot of food!” You're right, but I got through it for the sake of research. Anything to bring you the best insight!
